What if were worse defensively than our stats would show and Maddon being the genius he is has elected to have our teams play an easier defensive setting. Fielders further back towards the grass and thusly further from the bases. Combine that with our inability to hold runners close to the bases with good pitchouts and deeper fielders and you could have your answer.

Maybe it is that the cubs are giving up 2 out hits and don’t have the opportunity to get that second out

I thought you might be on to something with the caught stealing theory. What if our ability to turn double plays are low because our pitchers and catchers are just allowing runners to steal second too easily? It seems we never throw runners out, and you mentioned the 5% rate to back that up. If these runners are just talking second at will, they can’t be doubled up.
