This is interesting but I don't think you take into account the rhythm of playing / not playing every day, and when a player is in a hot streak. Also, why would you take our Russell against southpaws? I can see giving him an occasional breather, but for the most part he should be in the line up every day.

Earlier this year, there was an article posted on this site about how much more efficient Montero is offensively (and perhaps defensively) with two days rest per five pitcher starts as opposed to one day of rest per five pitcher starts. Thus, my questions are:

1. Given that Montero has enjoyed a significant period of rest due to injury, do you think that nullifies the need for the extra day of rest? I know it might be tough to craft a statistical argument one way or the other.

2. If Montero still should have that second day of rest, are the Cubs better off with Schwarber or Ross behind the plate? Perhaps Ross against left-handed opposing pitchers?

I find the situation to be highly interesting since Ross will still catch Lester and as far as we know Maddon will not pair Schwarber with Arrieta.

Enjoying this site all season long!
