He also seemed to have obvious “joy” while playing. It took me a while to figure out who he was, and when he made the team out of ST, I was happy to see that the Cubs had added a slick fielder to the roster.

I’ll remember him as the “unknown fielder” from 2015 ST.

I would re-sign him to play in triple-A as a front rank call up in the event of an injury next year. He plays several positions and plays them well. Just not up to super star standards. If he can improve his hitting in AAA, then his value to the Cubs, or as trade bait, goes up.

It’s the nature of the business that if you perform, you play. Herrera’s -0.3 WAR is good for last on the team, despite minimal playing time. I suppose in one sense it seems cruel, but well, that’s sports – it’s the career he chose, and he’s getting paid $900,000 this year.

Depending on what happens with Castro in the off-season, it’s possible the Cubs re-sign him to another 1-year deal.

We don’t need to do that. But it would be good to not forget (which is passive) his contributions to the team. Maybe it was one step too far down the purple highway.
