I looked into it, and there didn't seem to be a huge change in ground ball rate or spray ability. So I'm not sure that's it, but it's a very reasonable guess and (as you said) fixable with work.

Hey! Soriano was actually pretty good, especially when he got coaching. But I agree, Schwarber will be solid in left next year, assuming he works this offseason (he will).

Numbers and algorithms have their place, but if this were college football, I'd say he passes the "eye test." Schwarber has a supreme confidence about him, and a necessary short term memory in failure. Even when pitchers started to adjust to him, he never seemed to panic--defeated for a day only. In my modest opinion, I really feel that in time, if schwarber wanted to shorten up his swing, he could be a batting champion. Great understanding of the strike zone, trusts his hands, and country strong. You don't see see wild baez swings out of schwarbs

I suspect that part of his late-season offensive decline coincides with an increase in defensive shift. I haven't glanced at spray charts, but I don't recall Schwarber driving the ball to the left side on a consistent basis in the last month or two of the regular season.
This, too, is easily remedied.

I share your optimism regarding Schwarber's defense in LF. He definitely has the physical skills to play it well provided he doesn't put on weight. There's no way he could be worse than Soriano was ;-)
