Hi Justin! Your hypothesis might be true, but I have no way of knowing. I suspect the real reason for the (relatively) low salaries given to coaches is path dependency: nobody paid them very much to start with (a hundred years ago), and nobody needs to pay them much more now to keep them around. So nobody does.

Rian, nice analysis. The question I have is that it seems like you are only examining the demand side of the equation when determining the value. My hypothesis why coaches, managers, front office execs are not paid in a similar manner to the players comes from the supply side-- there are many more people who given the opportunity could fill those roles than there are people with the natural athletic talent to be a professional baseball player. Would you agree?

Basically all of that. The pitching coach also helps establish the organizational philosophy around pitching for the whole organization, and Bosio has definitely done that in Chicago.

Nice article, Rian. Lemme ask the following question, and it is not condescending: What do you think a pitching coach does on a daily basis? I think I have a general understanding of what Maddon does--line up construction, match-ups, media, talk with Theo & Jed, etc., etc. What does Bosio do? Teach new pitches? Change arm angles? Footwork mechanics? I guess the intent of my question is what "market inefficiency" guys like Bosio or Duncan do that results in dramatically different results than other pitching coaches?
