I agree with the "difficult to sell" point -- but mostly, I just wanted to make a joke at the expense of our shared history major. When I tried to apply for a history teaching position, I learned that there were hundreds of applicants for each opening -- more than any other position. I ended up going to law school -- a more marketable degree but a less humane work environment. Apologies for going off topic.

I think ideally they would have loved trading some of their position player depth for someone like Shelby Miller Jose Fernandez or even Tyson Ross, but the market clearly got away from them. What they are doing seems like a solid plan B, plus they still have all those young players if a good deal presents itself by mid-season.

I definitely think they've made an effort to acquire and keep these guys. Richard is more of a depth piece with fewer specific uses, but the other three are good pitchers who are versatile *and* effective in specific scenarios, as I outlined above.

With the back end of the rotation as it is, the FO wanted good SP depth. But also they needed MLB quality relievers. So they retained Cahill—somewhat surprisingly, IMO—and got Warren.

You picked up the history degree blurb but not "When he's not three beers deep....." Some of my best thoughts come out at three beers deep, perhaps writing at that stage is prohibited at BP.

Do you look at the Cubs' collection of swingmen as a coincidence or happenstance? Or is this perhaps a new direction in pitching staff philosophy that others around the league may seek to emulate?
