There's no doubt that upside favors Soler. Defensively having Fowler in center and Heyward in RF might be the best.

No one should be guaranteed to start just because of money, and Fowler's deal is no exception. Really, the scariest lineup the Cubs can deploy has an OF of Soler-Fowler-Heyward with Schwarber catching. That lineup would sit Montero, who's the second highest paid position player on the roster.

Soler, Schwarbs, J-Hey are the starters. It is Fowler that will hafta find his spots. And his .228/.331/.396 line vs. RIGHTIES last yr--3/4 of the Ps in the league--actually was more lethal than good. That line--outta the all-important leadoff spot--was one of the main culprits on a largely underachieving offense last yr. Let the kids play--they're already better--and will be great.

A trade of Cogs for Fowler is stomachable; Soler for Foeler a nauseating disgrace.

Why does everyone assume Fowler will get more starts than Soler? Fowler is a nice player and seems like a good dude, but Soler is a stud. The Cubs could've landed a nice deal for him after he crushed it in the playoffs. But they kept him because they believe in his potential. So why give away a bunch of his playing time to a guy they weren't even sure about re-signing? I'm willing to bet Soler will be the 3rd outfielder, not the 4th.

Agree with you here, but the trouble is that I think Soler needs a lot more starts than that.

I don't think this is going to be as much of a challenge as it seems. 20 days off each for Schwarber, Heyward and Fowler, 20 catching days for Schwarber and 10 interleague away dates puts Soler at 90 starts right off the bat.
