Too many millions of commentators–amateurs and “experts” alike–look only at the Cub surplus hitting talent, and say trade–without considering if there’s even a SP out there that represents a substantial upgrade over Hendricks and/or Hammel. It’s like having a 20 in blackjack, and not looking at what the dealer’s showing to risk doubling down or splitting. Remember, whatever SP we get also makes us bench/release/trade either Hammel or Hendricks as well.

Also, Hammel had an injury. If he performs like he did the previous year and a half, do you want to replace him?

There is no way I trade SOler for a number 4 guy.

Fowler is here, likely for one year. There is no guarantee the guys in the minors work out.

As well, if you want to make a trade for a pitcher, deal from the minors.

They definitely have tradeable depth, and lots of it, but my point is not much to trade it for. How would they improve the club? If someone gets injured or can’t play, that’s one way, but if everyone performs roughly as expected, there won’t be much beyond extra relievers the Cubs will even be interested in at the deadline.

But I would bet the farm on a mid-season trade of some sort.

During the offseason, you can spend two types of currency to improve the club; prospects, and CASH. During the season, you can only spend prospects. Thus, I think Theo is keeping the powder dry for mid-season deals. We clearly have tradeable depth, including Soler, Vogelbach, Candelario, McKinney, and probably others deeper in the minors
