He was already well down the Padres order by that point so much more susceptible to being knocked out of the game sooner as opposed to later. As you pointed out, Edwards was available as an additional arm so bullpen-wise they would have been fine. Of course we’ll never know how it might have worked out, but a 3 or 4 run lead after five innings would have been nice.
