We have read a lot from guys who can't stand to see someone like Tommy take on these issues with some depth and philosophy behind them. I think these guys have done their particular job for a long time and never questioned it, but maybe the world and their lives would be better if they had. It's tough to feel like you sucked it up a long time for someone else's reasons and will never get those years back. Ultimately it is the kid's life and there are two parties to his contract - I hope they find common ground. It's been fun to watch him play.

Good for Tommy for valuing himself over a job. The only reason people have given for being upset with his choice is the amount of money and prestige that goes with the job title. If he were working some cheap waiter job no one would question his dilemma. The analogy to the guy in the military is a bad one - you enter the military for reasons other than prestige and money, not showing up can mean someone dies. A replacement player not showing up for a game leaves very little ripple in the universe. A military member does not have strangers in newspapers judging his personal decisions and performance on an hourly basis. If TLS was raised like me, to consider other people, then he may also have an issue with taking a place on the Cubs when others would value it more. It is also possible his motivation is being affected by a chemical imbalance, like low adrenal function. Can't hate a guy who stays out for these reasons - far different than sitting out over a hissy fit.

I can't believe that, after reading this article, I actually started to feel sorry for Tommy La Stella and his current situation. What was I thinking?? I am very thankful that I decided to read the one and only comment left regarding this article and I am even more thankful that the aforementioned comment was left by someone with the insight and ability to wake me up and snap me back to reality. Thank you CHI SPORTSFAN! I could add some of my experiences over the last 17 years of military service that would make Tommy look like even more of a cry baby than he already does, but I am confident that the comments made by CHI SPORTSFAN say everything that needs to be said. Go Cubs Go!

The continued ridiculous attempt to make excuses for a grown man (who does make half a million a year) shows how terrible the parenting of multiple generations has become.

Do you really think the psychological pain of a single mom who barely makes minimum wage but who shows up at EVERY job she has on time, and without complaint is any less?

What people like this SHOULD be writing about is Mordecai Brown - who considered it a privilege and honor to play the game - much less get paid for it - with 2 fingers ripped of of his hand.

It doesn't matter if "there is more going on." It doesn't matter if he's "frightened" of the prospect of what this could do to his career.

He signed a contract. He gave his employers and teammates every impression that he would be part of a the "team" when he accepted those paychecks including nearly the entire season last year when the Cubs paid for him to rehabilitate. The organization made moves that deprived others from realizing their dream by taking a spot on the 40 man roster.

Try not showing up to your job tomorrow, don't tell your supervisor or your co-workers, who also are being impacted by your decision and see if you GET paid while you "work out your issues."

Grow up. Be a man. There are 18 year olds dying in Afghanistan for $30,000 a year because their employers tell them to engage an enemy combatant.

Forgive me for not sympathizing with a 27 year old man who literally ran home to mommy when all he had to do report to Iowa for a few weeks until he had a chance to earn a World Series ring.
