It was hard living through the loss in 2003, then meltdown in 2004 and subsequent meltdowns in the 2007 and 2008 playoffs. After that there were several dark years. I was even a little skeptical of Epstein when he was hired because Boston wasn't in good shape when he left.

I started going to games again in late 2014 after the Russell trade and when Baez, Soler, and Alcantara (yeah, I know) came up. I saw the future and it was good.

My children accused me of being a bandwagon Blackhawks fan in 2010, and it was true. I had a limited exposure to hockey in the 80s, and no real appreciation of the game itself. However, I persevered in my fandom, and now not only enjoy hockey as a game, irregardless of whether the Blackhawks are playing, but because I came to understand the game better, I can now enjoy soccer, because the games are similar tactically.

Bandwagon fans can become true fans. After all, you have to start somewhere as a fan.

That being said, what veteran fans hate about bandwagon fans is the appalling ignorance about the game itself that many of them not only show, but seem to celebrate. I'm sure that's what Royko hated the most, the hypocrisy of claiming fandom for a team in a sport you don't really understand.

Very good. I confess to twinges of disgust when someone claims to be a "lifelong Cubs fan" but has no idea who Lou Pinella or Randy Hundley are.

At the same time, my daughter was horribly compromised by an ex-boyfriend in college who made her a Mets fan, and for the first time this year she not only embraced the Cubs - but even knows some of the prospect names. (There is a God.)

I can't get too worked up about anymore. :-)
