If anyone else comes out and gives up a three-run bomb, then Joe is committed to using Chapman for a full 2 1/3. By managing as he did, he left himself an out – if the Cubs could expand their lead, he could more safely go to the riskier options in the pen. Granted, he got lucky, but he gave himself an out.

He was just trying to win the game in front of him.

For the record, I think Pinella made the right decision, and Maddon made the wrong one.
