I'd say Anderson and Montgomery have the best chances out of the gate because they're both out of options. Mills, Butler, and Rob Z are attractive as assets because they can pitch in Iowa until called upon (and then be sent back down). Of those three, I'd say Mills has best chance to stick in rotation long-term, unless Butler really turns it around. I see Rob Z as more of a lefty reliever type down the line.

Great write up.

I'd read bits on this guy but didn't realize he had 2 years after TJS with pretty impressive results.

So how would you rank the likelihood of Rob Z, Mills, Brett Anderson, (maybe String Bean Edwards) and Eddie Butler in gaining 5th starter position?

Just a note, Kyle Hendricks was not acquired in the trade that brought over Carl Edwards/Justin Grimm/Neil Ramirez/Mike Olt for Matt Garza. If I remember correctly Hendricks was acquired with Christian Villanueva for Ryan Dempster. It's very confusing because the Cubs also dealt Geovany Soto to the Rangers around that same time in a separate deal. A lot to keep track of!
