If his role is difficult to fill and he can do it, then wouldn't it hurt the team to change his role? I feel for Mike and his desire to prove himself as a quality starter, and the contract that goes with it, but I want the best cubs team possible, and that appears to have Mike in the swing role.

Damn straight he has a point. The FO specifically cited the possibility of moving him to starter in 2017 when he was signed. Instead he watched the Anderson Butler looney tune without any commitment to what he has said all along his primary desire. He's a team player but I'm guessing he's feeling pretty damn unappreciated as the Cubs just reward his devotion and keep dangling that carrot.

I totally get it's the Cubs discretion to play him where they want. I also think we've learned the mental portion of the game is damn hard at every position let alone pitcher. If what drives Mike is the desire to be a starter, you risk crushing his spirit and hope by not giving him an honest to god chance to earn it outright.

It would be one thing if he was ONLY just a reliever when they got him - but the Cubs are the ones who set the expectation - and I don't blame Mike a bit for his frustration to figure out where the hell he fits.
